Producers want to book experts and authors that they know are going to be great guests on their show and not "freeze up" due to nerves or have low energy that could put their audience to sleep.  Talk show guests must be articulate and "infotaining."  Their job is often literally on the line if they book a bad guest and for that reason, they always need to see a video of a potential guest.
That video cannot be a social media video because they are apples and oranges, but they want to see how a guest has handled themselves in an interview situation and verify they come across confident and command authority on their topic of expertise.  Producers don't like to take chances on an unknown expert or non-media savvy guest, so that's just one reason why landing your first TV interview is the hardest and a bit of a Catch-22.
National TV Talk Show Producers are under pressure to book the very best guests and for the same reason that your first interview is your hardest, 99% of the time, a National Show will not take a chance on someone who has not at least got their feet wet in media with being interviewed on a local network affiliate first. 
They absolutely cannot afford for an expert (and media newbie) to do a "Bambi in headlights" on national TV due to nerves.  They also want to know that their guests will be articulate and high energy in their delivery.  I'm not exaggerating when I say their job is often literally on the line if they book a bad guest so they will only book a tried and true expert.  Getting booked on local TV is the stepping stone to getting booked on national TV.
I know.  It does sound too good to be true.  There are a lot of people who make promises to get you on TV so you can get your As Seen On logos on your website, sales pages, or social media, and it's wise to be leary of such claims.  In fact, many will record their own program, interview you, and then put a clip on a station in Des Moines in the middle of the night, but you can say you've been on TV on a network affiliate so it's "technically" true, but far from "authentically true."

Also, when you watch people being interviewed on TV they make it look easy, don't they?  But what you may not know is that even the most experienced on-camera experts prepare and rehearse for every single TV interview.
You’ve probably heard it said that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. When television viewers first see you on camera on a TV talk show or in a newscast, they make an initial judgment in the first four seconds and that judgment is finalized largely within 30 seconds.
That's why media coaching is essential to learn the skills of mastering your message and time constraints of a TV interview, handling nerves, know what to say when you get a curveball question, and ace your on-camera delivery with poise and polish. 
As a producer, my job is to make sure that when you get in front of the camera that you look and do your best and if you skip media coaching, you're gambling with your reputation since you could derail your credibility and all you've worked so hard for when landing a TV interview.
It's been said that advertising is saying you're good, but PR is getting someone else to say you're good.
